When you are shopping for a vehicle online or at Galpin Volvo located in Van Nuys, you are sure to notice that many different types of vehicles advertise how well they performed on certain types of safety tests. These tests are most often performed by the IIHS or the NHTSA. Both of these organizations put vehicles through rigorous testing to see which is the safest on the road.

The IIHS tests consist of five different types of crash tests. This group is noted for testing how vehicles perform on off-set crash tests. If a vehicle performs well on this group’s tests, it is certified as a Top Safety Pick or a Top Safety Pick +.

The other major testing group is the NHTSA. Their tests include rollover tests and side crash testing. Vehicles are rated on a scale. If a vehicle receives one star, that is poor. A top-rated vehicle is given a five-star rating.
